Having read this book in 2017, I wonder what ,if anything, the after-actions resulting from the discovery of Rick Ames have produced. From my limited knowledge and observations (I held a Top Secret clearance and worked in a sensitive area within the DOD during part of the time that bad hombres like Ames and John Walker were selling out our country) and from following the recent news regarding apparent corruption in the upper levels of the FBI, one need not be a rocket scientist to believe that the agencies are still territorial, not cooperating with one another, and most likely fertile grounds for bad actors. Having read other accounts of Ames, I found this book to provide far more detail into the total man from start to finish. At times a little boring but for the most part very interesting, well written and very well researched. After reading various books about John Walker, Aldrich Ames, Kim Philby and other notable spies, it appears that they were all alcoholics and living beyond their apparent financial means. As you read this book, keep asking yourself: How could supervisors and managers over these characters be so deaf and/or blind. A good read which I recommend.

This book is a well-detailed history of the espionage committed by Aldrich Ames, and how the culture of the CIA's Directorate of Operations enabled him to continue for much longer than he should have been able to, especially given all his warning flags. Recommended for experts and dabblers. :)

This book exposes how incompetent the C.I.A. was & probably still is, they should have been on to this guy years before the F.B.I. finally caught him!

I enjoyed reading this account of just how she's was finally caughtI can only hope that lessons were learned and there is follow up

It's a couple of decades since I last read this eye-opening book that adroitly delves into the failures within the CIA that allowed Aldrich Ames to create such havoc. Thought it well past time for a reread.I think I might be even more shocked this time around by the distinctly hamfisted search for a mole within the CIA during the 1980s and early 90s. Mind-boggling amateur lack of basic investigatory principles.Fluent précis of events leading up to Ames' perfidy and traitorous behaviour. Shocking lack of intelligent (ironic) assessment of what or who was ultimately responsible for the almost clean-sweep rolling up of CIA sources within the Soviet Union in 1985/86.Disappointingly, I think the same old Intelligence intra-Agency obstructionism still exists. The US Intellegence community is still sadly lacking in the field of HUMINT. On the surface, little appears to have changed. Certainly, the impact of 9/11/2001 demonstrated the gulf in intelligence sharing still existent.Would be interesting to know if any of the suggested changes by various investigating organs post-Ames debacle have ever actually been implemented. My guess? Probably not ...

This was an interesting book, though I didn't understand all of the nuaces. It gave a complete picture of the damagedone by Ames ad the reasons he was able to get away with it. I learned about the intelligence business and how it works.

This is a great book, but has bee. Released before w different cover-why I gave 3 stars, BUT is a good book

Really good back story about Ames motivations and the ineptitude of government supervisors and who they promote. The CIA is exposed in this read. The ending wraps up a little slow but overall pretty good.
