The Village: 400 Years of Beats and Bohemians, Radicals and Rogues, a History of Greenwich Village, by John Strausbaugh

Review

“[A] loving and thoroughly researched look at what [Strausbaugh] calls ‘a zone of rogues and outcasts from the start.’ . . . Fine social history humanized with a sort of paradise-lost wistfulness.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))“Strausbaugh has produced the definitive history of America’s bohemian wellspring and prototypical modern neighborhood with all the verve and fun and rigor it deserves.” (Kurt Andersen, bestselling author of True Believers and Heyday)“A great, sprawling saga of genius and vice in New York City’s Greenwich Village. John Strausbaugh captures Bohemia at its best and level worst, reminding us why we love this place. His account is breathtaking.” (Teresa Carpenter, bestselling author of New York Diaries)“The very best kind of cultural history: Literate, lucid, erudite, and entertaining.” (Michael Lesy, author of Murder City: The Bloody History of Chicago in the Twenties)

Intimate and intense, Strausbaugh's Village Tell-all is packed with outlandish, inspiring and often ghoulish commentary from famous folks-- like Dylan (who is slowly roasted to a crisp in the words of fellow bohemians), Bodenheim, Hendrix, Ginsberg, Arendt, Kerouac, Amram, Mailer and Monroe--and the not so famous: mob insiders, bought cops, private detectives, drag queens, and some who lived with such fervor that their flames flashed briefly and burned out. If you've spent any time in the Village, your own memories will hold you at the epicenter of a story that grows into a whirlwind of personalities and events so exactingly researched that only the choicest details seem to have made it into print. If you missed the Village in its heyday, now is the time to explore the winding off-the-grid streets and alleys. Iconic characters, hi-brow and low, relive personal moments under Strausbaugh's vivid orchestration. And whether the concert takes place late at night at the Cedar Tavern with Norman Mailer; at the back door of the Golden Rule Pleasure Club with Marcel Duchamp; boozing it up atop the Washington Arch to declare the independence of the "Republic of Greenwich Village," or entering a dark rat-infested west end shed at the end of crumbling pier 46, Strausbaugh's off-the-cuff style will involved you beginning to end. "The Village" is peopled by characters who tell their secrets as though they can hardly believe they lived through them. Some didn't. This is history at its best; reality more alluring, bizarre and breathtaking than fiction will ever be.

As a Village resident for three decades now, living in a small little “Carriage House” on Charles Street, more than once people knocked on my door and shared with me the history of my home and neighborhood as in “Bette Midler lived here” or “Mel Torme and Peggy Lee had a fling here.” Probably true, and this fascinating compilation of personalities and stories dating from before New York was New York is a very readable and engaging. The Village was always a Village - a magnet for creative types and always a happening place. Whether it will remain so as most mortals are priced out these days remains to be seen.

Dad lived on East 10th Street in the 1960s. In the 70s, he used to take me to the old bookstores that also sold old comic books. Those old stores were throughout the Village. This book is truthful; the Village has, indeed, changed.

Bought this book, used, to relive and review the two decades I lived in The Village on West 4th Street -- the fabulous 60s & 70s! And for all the photos. Didn't read any other decades, to be fair. Relive your own time in that wonderful place...and if you never lived in The Village, you won't get any of it.

This is a fascinating look into the make up of Greenwich Village, its characters, players, and free spirits. John Strausbaugh does his homework in this page turner, and that gives you an intimate reading experience.

Great source of background to this fascinating section of Manhattan. As yearly visitors to the West Village to visit our daughter and son in law who own a skateboard shop there, it is helpful in understanding the history, changes, and influences on this area. Was recommended by an American Studies professor who writes about political and social movements, many of which germinated in these neighborhoods. Most of all, it’s a fun, if somewhat dense read.

I was born and raised in The Village and found this book to be accurate. A big read at over 500 pages butis written so you canmove around easily.

Not just for New Yorkers! This is a fascinating account of the history of Greenwich Village - from it's early history through recent times. The array of artists, musicians, poets, authors, political figures, and other influential people is remarkable. The geographic aspect of the area is also quite interesting. A truly wonderful insight to a very unique place. Highly recommend.
