They fall in love instantly, and this latest novel by Buchan (Revenge of the Middle-Aged Woman, etc.) records the parallel 19-year trajectories of their marriage and Will's political career, the private and the public. Buchan crafts beautiful sentences, which she stacks in airy, digestible paragraphs; yet the novel fails to convey the excitement of the events in Fanny's consciousness that constitute the real plot. She wrestles from first to last page in service of a single question: what exactly does it mean to be good? Fanny wishes to be not just the titular good wife but also a good mother to 18-year-old Chloe; a good daughter to her fiery wine-merchant Italian refugee father, Alfredo; and a good sister-in-law to the alcoholic Meg, who seems to lurk in every doorway. Fanny must also please her husband's political party leaders by appearing in skirts of the correct length and avoiding all substantive talk at state dinners, and she feels duty-bound to reach out to the mother, Sally, who abandoned her at age three to run off to America. Yet these relationships, which constitute the substance of the novel, have scant weight. Even when Fanny makes an impulsive trip to Italy, the story fails to ignite. Buchan's fans will still find much to admire in this thoughtful, intelligent effort, but will hope the author's next springs more vividly to life. My problem was I just didn't like any of the characters, especially "the good wife." I didn't like her subservience, her choice of husband, her willingness to live someone else's life, her lack of backbone when it came to her sister-in-law's manipulative and controlling personality. I didn't like her choices in the end. Nothing liberating about her. She just meanders: giving too much of herself to the selfishness of others, living choices that she hates. There is no striking back that I can see. She just ends up choosing the same small life that she allows to be controlled by others.

Not sure the good wife actually “struck back.” I felt she succumbed to her life and accepted her fate. Not disappointing necessarily, but rather ho-hum. The sister-in-law, Meg, although a secondary character, was by far the most interesting and most developed character. The relationship between Meg and Fanny was a much more enjoyable story line than the husband/wife relationship. Glad the author spent time with Meg and Fanny.

As a reader who has lived long, Fanny's life story brought back memories and how living changes your perspective of any given moment. The youthful bride, young mother, empty nester and all the changes in between. This is a well written observation about how marriages/life evolve as we grow from childhood through adulthood.

In this book, we see the development of a marriage and all the ways a woman can be subordinated to it. But Francesca also shows us the many joys a marriage can bring and helps the reader be better able to weigh the good and bad parts. The tension within Francesca kept me riveted. I found this one of those memorable books that I'll reflect back on.

I enjoyed this book very much. The writing was well done. The author used a lot of descriptive language which made me feel like I was in the story. I could feel the characters as they went through their highs and lows.

It took me a long time to get through this one. Not any action at all or much of a plot sorry to say. More than likely would not read this author again.

I liked the first book I read by this author, but now I can see it is the same storyline. A middle-aged married couple. The man is dominant and the wife has no backbone. Through the entire book, I kept wishing the female character would stand up for herself. Finally, I got so bored I just skimmed through to the end. I won't be buying any more of her books. They are ALL the same. It's a shame, because Buchan is a good writer. She just needs to give her characters some personality.

Disappointing compared to previous books by this author!
