Who didn't grow up on Shel Silverstein's A Light in the Attic?If you missed out, I am so sorry for you. My teacher read this to us in 5th and 6th grades and I loved hearing the whacky poems. If I hadn't already been in love with reading, this would have done it.Shel Silverstein's poetry is a must-have for anyone's home library - whether they are children or adults!
I ordered this for my 8 year old after we completed another Shel Silverstein book. She loves the different poems and entries in the book. I had these when I was younger and enjoyed them a lot, so I wanted her to get the same enjoyment. For the most part she can read this on her own with no help. There are some passages with difficult words to pronounce and also words that have the spelling somewhat changed or just a randomly made up word all together. This is a good buy for nightly bedtime story or just to pass time throughout the day. There are a mixture of funny passages and some serious ones, as well as ones that will leave you scratching your head because it made no sense or just seemed a little odd.
This is one of those books that should be considered mandatory reading for any child. I read this as a child and forgot about it until just a few years ago. A friend of mine had a child and when thinking of what might make a nice gift, I remembered how happy Shel Silverstein made me as a kid. You know it's good writing when you can remember verbatim the words (lyrics?) of certain poems (more specifically, the "twistable turnable man").Do your children a favor and get them this book. It's like fuel for their imagination.
Shel Silverstein is a great poet for children and adults. I grew up reading his poetry, and even now, as an adult, I continue to enjoy his writing. It is whimsical, funny, and many of his poems carry a deeper message (most of which went completely over my head as a kid). You won't regret Shel-ling out some money for this book!
My 5 year old daughter loves these books. I have fun reading the poems since I read them as a kid. I also like that most are pretty short so we can read for just a minute or longer when we have time.
The first copy of this book I ordered came with the cover ripped pretty badly but Amazon is wonderful with their customer service and I had a replacement in two days.I remember these books from when I was a kid. Checking them out at the library at school. So I wanted another copy. This is one of my favorites of his. I like the good color special edition cover that comes with this.Highly recommend all of his poem books.
Classic.From his humble writing beginnings in Playboy to his beloved children's poems Silverstein is a classic. Silverstein inspires imagination and whimsy. Decades later, I find myself reading these again with my daughter and I still love them. Now I can love them with a new generation.
Shel Silverstein books are my favorite! I loved reading them as a child. I was very happy to find them on Amazon for such a low price. I love the collection of poems in A Light in the Attic. I was very happy to find other Shel Silverstein books for a low price on this website as well. I am very glad I bought these books. Shel Silverstein wrote many fantastic poems and I can not wait to share them with my future children.
Love Shel Silverstein. His books are just magical. Would recommend everyone read any one of his books. I’m 49 and my mother is 76 and we gave these as gifts to one another. It was the best gift I received!
