About the Author

Robert Ross Smith received a B.A. and M.A. in American History from Duke University. A graduate of the Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1943, he served on the staff and faculty of the Special Services School at Washington and Lee University and then, for two years, was a member of the G-3 Historical Division at General Douglas MacArthur's General Headquarters, Southwest Pacific Area. He presently holds a reserve commission as a lieutenant colonel of Infantry. Mr. Smith has been with the Office of the Chief of Military History, either as an officer on active duty or as a civilian, since January 1947. His first book in the series THE UNITED STATES ARMY IN WORLD WAR II, The Approach to the Philippines, was published in 1953. He is currently working on his third volume for the series, The Riviera to the Rhine. Mr. Smith's other works include an essay in Command Decisions (New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, 1959, and Washington: Office of the Chief of Military History, 1960); an article on tactical supply problems in Military Review; the article on the Pacific phase of World War II in the Encyclopædia Britannica; and an account of the Battle of Ox Hill (1 September 1862) in Fairfax County and the War Between the States, a publication of the Fairfax County (Va.) Civil War Centennial Commission.

This book is the most comprehensive study of of the liberation of the Philippine Islands from the Japanese in 1945. It covers every aspect of the campaign in great detail. The full color maps in the back of book are invaluable. Other illustrations and pictures in the body of the text are in black and white; they also add clarity to understanding the complexity and intensity of the battle. I highly recommend a copy to any interested military historian or participant in the battle.

Awful, unreadable print job. The words are all broken up. I have read nearly all of the books in The United States Army in WW II, and none of them are like this. How do I get a refund?? Don't buy the Kindle edition of this book!No stars!

The Filipino education system did cover the majority of the information. The book was good as a refresher and facts that I had forgotten about. This would be a good book for American Filipinos who have not covered the historical facts within.

This kindly adaptation is a mishmash of gibberish. Amazon really needs to take more time in converting these. In this condition this should be free.

Others have complained about this book, but they are looking at it from the wrong perspective. This is a military case study of the tactics and strategy of US forces tasked to retake the Philippines at the end of WWII. As such, this is an excellent book. It goes into painstaking detail of every unit involved, the personalities of the senior leaders, strategy discussed and employed, planning, preparation, execution... covers each of the battles, their outcomes and implications. From a tactical point of view, this is gold. This is not light reading, nor entertainment. As long as you approach it from a tactical or scholarly perspective, it is excellent work. The only thing I wasn't wild about was that it was a reproduction of the original text, rather than being retyped. This made the document a bit harder to read... nothing major. Nice, clean, retyped, modern font would be nice, but would detract from the overall feel.

This is one of several "Green Books" that gave me specific information on my father's activities in WW II. The book provides the authoritative source for the specific actions that took place in the Phillipines.Each of the "Green Books" that cover areas my father was at are now part my "Heirloom Library" on his military history, that I plan to pass on to my son and granchild.If you are a serviceman from the Philippines action, you should have this book as a tribute to yourself. Your family and friends should have and read this to understand why my generation, and laters, owe so much to you.This book is particularly pertinent to my "Heirloom Library" since my grandson is half Filipino.
