About the Author

Thomas E. Patterson is Bradlee Professor of Government and the Press in the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He was previously distinguished professor of political science in the Maxwell School of Citizenship at Syracuse University. Raised in a small Minnesota town near the Iowa and South Dakota borders, he was educated at South Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota, where he received his Ph.D. in 1971. Currently running the "Vanishing Voter" study at the Kennedy School of Government, which has been widely used in the media and on college campuses, Tom is also the author of six books and dozens of articles, which focus primarily on the media and elections. His book, 'Out of Order'(1994), received national attention when President Clinton said every politician and journalist should be required to read it. An earlier book, 'The Mass Media Election'(1980), received a 'Choice' award as Outstanding Academic Book, 1980-81. Another of Patterson's books, 'The Unseeing Eye'(1976), was recently selected by the American Association for Public Opinion Research as one of the fifty most influential books of the past half century in the field of public opinion. His current research includes a study of White House communication and a study of the news media's role in Western democracies. His work has been funded by major grants from the National Science Foundation, the Markle Foundation, the Smith-Richardson Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Not much for reviewing a textbook but I have to say this book is amazing and covered many important topics and both illustratesd them clear and concisely. It makes many great comparisons to our modern government and the one established by our founding fathers. Highly recommend if you wanna wake someone up to how government should run and what has led it to run the way it is today.

This book has good information about the government and their ways of introducing politics. It's a good book to learn.

Great textbook! I used this as a basic textbook for my Political Science college class. Even though it wasn't the exact book for that class, this still contained all the basic constitution and amendment information that we were learning. Great break-up of material, explained well. I recommend.

Arrived exactly when it was supposed to and exactly as described. I got this for a college class and it saved me a TON of money rather than buying it from the bookstore. My book was exactly like everyones elses except much cheaper than the ones bought from the campus bookstore.

If your professor or teacher tells you to buy a loose leaf convince them to get the ebook because the sizing and lack of binding is ridiculous and impractical for transporting in one piece. I have to take the pages by chapters at a time to school. The holes that are punched in this book don’t line up with any binders at all

Good text book. A bit biased but still a good read for National Government class.

We used this book not only for college, but to understand more about politics. The content is easy to follow, explains things clearly and leads to to our government as it was and how it is today.

With everything going on I wanted to refresh my memory about this subject. To stay away from bias sources and be a better citizen, I read this book. I never thought I would enjoy it so much. If you're able to read it along with the edx government class that will help you even more.
