I have seen Robin Kimmerer's miniature landscape for myself. Yet, this is so much more than a book about mosses. This is a Native American woman speaking. This is a mother's story. I discovered the writings of Robin Wall Kimmerer through her On Being interview with Krista Tippett - The Intelligence in All Kinds of Life. Both of her books were immediately added to the top of my reading list. Then, in December, just before a trip to the state of Georgia, I decided that Savannah, with its famous Spanish Moss would be the perfect setting for reading "Gathering Moss". I was undeterred when, early in the book, I learned that Spanish Moss is not a moss; it's a flowering plant. Fun fact.A major topic of the book, especially the first several chapters, is scientific research about moss in general and specific details about many different varieties of moss. Sadly, far too many years have passed since my high school course in biology, so most of this detailed knowledge was lost on me. Again, this did not diminish the value of the book. And, if in the future I decide to brush up on my knowledge of plant reproduction, I now have on my bookshelf a very practical resource.The aspects of the book that I thought were absolutely lovely were the descriptions of the connections between moss, other plants, and humankind. To me, this presented beautiful examples and metaphors for the roles, connections, and relationships between humans and the other lives that inhabit our planet. The images will influence me in unknown ways for some time to come.

This book is rapidly climbing to the top of my favorite books of all time. For one thing, Kimmerer has a gift with language. She is both precise and poetic in her descriptions of mosses, her chosen field of study. Yet she is never prosaic, as she allows, thanks to her Native American background, for other dimensions of her subject to emerge. In these elegant essays, she touches on the role of moss in the evolution of plants, the adaptation of moss to city life, the sex life of mosses, and the traditional uses of moss by indigenous people. Kimmerer writes: “Our stories from the oldest days tell about the time when all beings shared a common language—thrushes, trees, mosses, and humans. But that language has been long forgotten. So we learn each other’s stories by looking, by watching each other’s way of living. I want to tell the mosses’ story, since their voices are little heard and we have much to learn from them. They have messages of consequence that need to be heard, the perspectives of species other than our own. “ Her great gift is that she can tell the story of moss both as a scientist and a poet.

What could a layperson possibly expect from a book on mosses? Since I loved Professor Robin Wall Kimmerer's award-winning "Braiding Sweetgrass" so much, I eventually bought this book out of curiosity. What a gem! It's as if the author built a miniature spaceship and took me on a voyage to the planet of the mosses. And, like any traveler whose good fortune it is to meet up with an wise and experienced tour guide, I returned not merely with cherished memories, but gained invaluable lessons and inspiration (and appreciation!) of another culture's habits and ways of being.

A gentle, insightful and startling series of essays about a family of creatures that most of us hardly if ever notice. I can't begin to say how beautiful the writing is (I have been a professional writer for 40 years) or how informed and convincing the stories. A truly beautiful book which has received the recognition it deserves. An episode of "On Being" ([...]) inspired me to buy this book and I am grateful I did. Highly recommended.

I loved this book so much that I bought three more copies to send to friends. It's extremely good writing about a little known area of science and nature, told with a native american sensibility. I need to find out what else this remarkable woman has written.

LOVE this author. She has such a personal way of helping us relate to plants. Grounding in science, wrapped in her cultural wisdom moss becomes so much more than a ground cover!

I so enjoy the author's point of view and engaging writing. I loved her other book, Braiding Sweetgrass, and this one is just as lovely. I have bought more copies of both of Robin Wall Kimmerer's books as gifts.

I was expecting a book of pictures of mosses so that I could identify them when I was moss hunting. What I got was one of the most interesting books I have read recently. It is packed with information about the lives of mosses from a moss point of view. The book reports on years of painstaking research by the author and her students (with side trips into the author's own life experiences). We learn about the strategies used by mosses to reproduce and spread, to deal with adverse conditions, and to make possible by their lives the growth of other plants and whole ecosystems. Don't hesitate to get this book. I guarantee that you won't be able to put it down
