This is one of the best, if not *the* best, book on Tolkien that I've ever read. The question of Tolkien's philosophy in writing his fiction have always fascinated me, but there has long been a disagreement in scholarship as to where he was planted: is Tolkien's work pagan? Gnostic? Christian? Modern? Medieval? McIntosh's work doesn't just choose one and argue it, nor does it choose them all and say that Tolkien's philosophy is ambiguous and undeveloped. McIntosh shows that Tolkien is heavily indebted to St. Thomas and the Thomastic culture he grew up in, but also how he uses Thomastic ideas and theology to re-mythologize the world, from common things to religious discourse. One of the reviewers on the back writes that this book will become a seminal book or "canon" - and it should. McIntosh's work re-founds and focuses philosophical investigations into Tolkien's work.

Never have I found such clarity in any of my prior reading about the theology of Saint Thomas, or even Summa Theologica itself, as I've gained from this book. Presenting Tolkien's work, almost as contemporary Thomist parables, to explain the often intricate theological concepts of the angelic doctor was for me most effective. This incredibly thoughtful work would likely be heartily endorsed by Tolkien and St. Thomas alike. Extremely well done!

I found this walk though of the Thomistic influence on Tolkien's work both enlightening and instructive. It illuminated for me areas of thought regarding creation and its relationship metaphysically to both art and technology (enhancement vs domination) but it also taught me much about degrees or categories of good and evil. That's really important. In today's world such exploration in fiction is regarded with suspicion and contempt. But then we now seek to learn of ourselves by studying simians rather than Angels. Regarding such exploration as trite is a reflection not of the subject but of the critic. Indeed. This book has left me with much to explore.The first bit is heavy and worth slogging through to understand the rest. I'll probably have to read it again.
