A huge contribution again, this landmark text reveals just how much the practice of surgery calls for the assets of both judgment and craftsmanship. This is a book for both the thinker and the practical parts of all who seek mastery. Chassin's original work (about 1984) was terrific, and this is now the 4th edition. While posthumously compiled, Scott-Connor was hand picked by Chassin as the succeeding editor, and they overlapped on prior editions. She has done a FABULOUS job of honoring the original intent of this thoughtful and clear book, and propelling it into the 21st century by content. She has also wisely chosen to keep including "legacy" operations for the sake of completeness. The title reflects well the excitement that awaits the reader by including the phrases "operative strategy" and "expositive atlas". As a final favor to the reader, Chassin's style (completely preserved) is that of a colleague who is gracious and gray-haired wise.

Diagnosis, operative techniques, complication avoidance, and management are discussed thoroughly. The diagrams, line drawings, etc. of traditional and endoscopic strategies are very well presented. The book is over 1000 pages in length. Orthopaedic and neurological surgeries are not dealt with. This book is essential for general surgeons wanting to review before scrubbing in on cases.
