My son’s preschool recommended that we get a few “no hitting†books to help him get through a hitting phase he’s had. This book covers more problem behavior than hitting, but I felt that it was also going to give him ideas about behavior he is not exhibiting, such as squeezing a cat and sticking his tongue out. I also don’t like that it isn’t a board book; the pages are thick paper but I can still see them ripping.
We got this for our 2 year old daughter. She loves the book, and the flaps that lift are a clever way to show things to do that aren't hitting. However, some of the pages have odd alternatives to the bad behavior shown. It's not a big issue, but it's just not how we would approach the situation.
My 20-month-old son's childcare provider suggested that I purchase this book to use at home. They have one at school that he really gravitated to. He's been having some trouble learning self control, so anytime he tries to hit a friend, his teacher hands him this book. He goes through the whole thing "I"m MAD!" on his own, uses a sign for every page (like squeezing the cat) and at the end, he's calm. He even handed it to his sister the other day when she needed to calm down. He actively seeks this book out to calm himself down now. THE BEST $5 I ever spent and I will purchase this as a GIFT to other parents.
It's a cute book with a great message that's easy for younger children to understand. It's a different type of lift the flap book in the sense that you don't really open a flap but rather lift the entire page. This being said, it's definitely harder for my son to try and rip the "flap" off so that's handy.I plan on purchasing more books by this author.
I really like this book and so does my 2 year-old (25 months) but it's NOT a book about hitting; prospective buyers should know that before they buy. This book is about "anger" in general. It highlights the typical toddler physical manifestations of anger and suggests alternative, acceptable behaviors to cope. The book has nice "key" words that my toddler loves to hear me emphasize, then she repeats them such as: "Bang bang" and "Scribble scribble". She really connects with the drawings and is pulled in by the flaps. However, I was expecting a book about "hitting" when I ordered "No Hitting" and this book did not deliver. This book has *one* page about hitting and the rest is about acting out physically in other ways. I bought "When I Feel Angry" by Cornelia Maude Spelman to cover the anger issue. I was looking for for a book completely about hitting and how it hurts people and is not okay. I bought "Hands Are Not For Hitting" by Agassi PhD and Marieka Heinlen but that book was far too long/wordy for a two year-old. Unfortunately there aren't many books that are concise, attractive to a toddler and get the point across on the subject of hitting. Just keep in mind this book is about "anger" if you buy it. I'm thinking of buying the board book version of "Hands Are for Hitting" as one reviewer "complained" it was too short and that's right up our alley with a 2 year-old.
This is a pretty bad book for several reasons: 1. Only the first page deals with hitting. The rest of the pages deal with other behavioral issues which just gave my toddler ideas (squeezing the cat, etc.) 2. The flaps to lift are so big that they take up the entire page, so it is really just teaching my toddler to turn pages the wrong way. 3. The one page that deals with hitting says to not hit babies. It doesn’t discourage hitting of anyone else.
This was a great purchase! We love Karen Katz. It took a while before our baby was old enough to begin to comprehend the anger/emotional management ideas suggested by the book, but setting the foundation early has helped a lot. The sentences are simple and direct. That gives us the opportunity to turn each page into a talking point. My mom is an elementary counselor and Katz is an author she highly recommends for guiding little ones.
This is a terrible book, we won't be reading it to our son. Whilst I understand what the author was trying to do here, I don't think it's helpful to be reading your child lines such as - "I'm mad! I want to squeeze the cat". Why on Earth would you put ideas in kids' minds like this? I bet an awful lot of cats got squeezed after well-meaning parents bought their little ones this book.
